Part 1:What’s a Stroopwafel?

An interview with our owners’ daughter-in-law, Leanne, about the infamous Dutch cookie, the Stroopwafel.

Hey! Katherine here. If we haven’t met yet, I’m Michael and Rebecca’s daughter. One of my brothers, Daniel, lives on our family farm in Central Oregon with his wife and two kids. My other brother, Andrew, lives with his wife close by in Salem, Ore.

A few weeks ago, my husband, Alex, and I loaded the car with Hazella goodie boxes and went on a quick trip over the mountains to visit my brother Daniel, his family, and (at a safe distance) the grandparents.

While we were there, we got the chance to interview Daniel’s wife, Leanne, who happens to be Dutch, about her family’s history in The Netherlands and some aspects of Dutch culture.

Leanne has been a big help and inspiration behind getting Hazella Bake Shop going. The name for our bakery literally came from the Dutch word, “gezellig,” that Leanne shared with us. Aside from all of her trips over to help us physically get the space ready for our May soft-opening, Leanne has shared many of her family recipes from Holland and showed us the tricks behind getting them right.

In this video, Leanne shares one of her family favorite treats that we have started to make here at Hazella. It’s a very thin shortbread-waffle cookie filled with a special caramel sauce with special spices and a secret syrup that has to be ordered all the way from Europe.

Also in the video, Leanne shows the proper Dutch way to eat this cookie to get the most out of it’s special caramel interior.

Check out the video below and come on down to Hazella to give Stroopwafels a try!
